This & That -- "Sara Lee"

Charles Lubin and his brother-in-law owned three bakeries in the Chicago area. But Lubin dreamed of bigger things-he wanted a product that would be distributed nationally. In 1949 he created a cheesecake that he cold sell through supermarkets, and named it after his daughter, Sara Lee Lubin. Within five years the company had developed a way to quick-freeze Sara Lee cakes and was selling them all over the U.S.

"Quotables"

We must either find a way or make one.

Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure.

I have learned a long time ago not to flinch when someone says they are going to hit you.

What's going to happen to the executive's job in the next ten years? Nothing. It is amazing how many jobs are exactly the same as they were in 1900.

Do They Discount Your Ideas?

If you want people to take you seriously on the job and you feel that they're discounting your ideas because you're a lot younger than the bosses, you might want to:

  • Be specific and decisive. Don't say, "I'm really excited about this strategy. I believe it could work well." Instead try, "Six other companies in our industry have been successful with this strategy. Here's why:..."
  • Speak more deliberately. Gain attention for your ideas. Pause before you make your point. What this communicates: "I'm an important person about to say something worth hearing."
  • Don't share personal information that could make you look young and foolish. Example: Don't complain about a bad deal you got on a car. Instead, talk about a financial problem you solved for your tenants' association.
  • Study the successful people in your office. What makes them appear in control? Model their behavior.

When Team Members Balk

Some people have trouble fitting into a workplace team. Here are some you might encounter with suggestions on how to deal with them:

    • The Geniuses: They know a lot and master tasks easily. A lack of challenge frustrates them.

Solutions: Make them team leaders, tap them for special projects and rotate their jobs more often.

    • The Silents: Basically shy, they work well and get along but won't share ideas or take part in meetings.

Solutions: Team them with more assertive co-workers or send them to assertiveness training. And give them jobs that will force them into the limelight.

    • The Stewards: They think they work for the union and must oppose management on principle.

Solutions: Let the team as a group deal with their complaints on the spot. Let management deal with them on performance issues.

    • The Underemployeds: The proverbial square pegs, they're overtrained and the job is too easy.

Solutions: Have them coach others and give them leadership roles. Ask how they would expand their jobs or make them more interesting.

    • The Overemployeds: They can't do the job, and more training won't help.

Solutions: Pair them with an underemployed, find work they can do or consider termination.
